What are cellular lightweight concrete (CLC) blocks ?- Their advantages, price & different sizes.

1. What are the CLC blocks?

CLC stands for cellular lightweight concrete. The CLC blocks are manufactured by blending foaming agents with fine aggregates and binding material.
As the name suggests, they are light in weight with porous formation, having sharp edges and a good finish.

2. What are the raw materials used in CLC blocks?

The raw materials used are,
 1. Cement:  The cement should be of 53 grade.
2. Fly ash or sand:   Either of the two is used or mixed together in the required proportions.
3. Foaming agents:  They are available in two types. 1. Synthetic or 2.  Protein-based.
4. Water.

3. What are the advantages of CLC blocks?

Following are some of the advantages of using CLC blocks.
1. Lightweight:
They are lighter in weight when compared to clay bricks and concrete blocks. This makes it easier to work with, saving labor costs.
2.  Block size:
The bigger size of these blocks saves mortar cost and helps in achieving faster construction.
3.  Dead load:
Due to its lightweight, the dead load over the RCC structures reduces considerably, which helps in reducing the size of the concrete members. The lesser the rebar and concrete raw materials, the more you save money.
4. Plaster thickness:
The thickness of the plaster needed over these blocks will be less in comparison to clay bricks and concrete blocks. The smooth surface with the porous nature helps to complete the plasterwork faster by using less mortar.
5. Thermal insulation:
They have good thermal insulation and fire protection properties.
6. Sound insulation:
In comparison to other blocks, they have high sound insulation characters.
7.  Eco-friendly, since fly ash is used as a raw material.
8. Lower water absorption quality.

4. What are the different sizes of CLC blocks?

The following table shows the available sizes of the CLC blocks, that are ideal for construction works.

5. What are the no. of CLC blocks in one cubic meter of volume?

Some manufacturers quote the market rate for the CLC block in a cubic meter. So it will be better if you know the no. of blocks of different sizes which fit in one cu.m to arrive at the rate of one block.
