M-sand and its manufacturing process./What is M - sand?/How M- sand is manufactured?

1. What is M-sand?

The sand which is produced artificially by crushing the stones like granite and sandstone in a quarry is referred to as manufactured sand or in short, we call it M-sand. Some other words which are used for M-sand are crushed sand or artificial sand or Robo sand.

Nowadays, due to the huge demand for sand in the construction industry, all our natural sand resources from the river bed got depleted. To protect our environment, the government has enforced some strict laws with rules and regulations for the supply of natural sand. So the best alternative for the river sand having more or equal quality standards is M-sand.

Throughout history, as we were using only natural sand, everyone has practical experience and knowledge of natural sand, knowing its quality, and safety.

However, M-sand as a recent replacement for natural sand is natural to raise a question in everybody's mind.

i.e. is it safe? or can I use M- sand for my building?

From an engineering point of view, the answer is YES.

2. How the M - sand is manufactured?

Different types of crushers are used in the stages followed by screening and classifying the M-sand. The crushers which are used in the production process are jaw crusher, cone crusher, V.S.I.C, gyratory crusher, roller crusher, rod mill crusher, hammer mill crusher, etc.

The right choice of the crusher used in the sequences depends upon the raw material used and also upon the size, grade, and quality of the  M-sand needed.

If the M-sand is manufactured in the right process, with the five stages as per the engineering norms and criteria, then they will rank one edge above the natural sand.

Now let us see one of such different stages which should be followed in the M-sand manufacturing process.

1. Jaw crushing:

The boulders which are mined from the quarry are first fed into the jaw crusher. Here the moving jaw plate crushes the boulder into aggregates of uneven sizes.

2. Cone crushing:

The aggregates are again crushed here into smaller pieces which are usually below 100 mm in size.

3. V.S.I.C:

The full form is a vertical shaft impact crusher. This is one of the most commonly used crushers in M-sand making, and it is gaining popularity due to the good quality of the produced sand.

Here the material is fed into the vertical chamber with the rotating shaft at the high r.p.m. The materials of consistent size with the minimum surface area are delivered which is now passed on to stage 4 of the process.

4. Screening:

The M-sand of the required particle size is screened and segregated here.

5. Classification:

The classifiers work on the two principles. They are either wet or dry type classifiers. Here the M-sand is classified as per the codes and engineering standards and stored for dispatch.
