What is white cement?- Their uses, price, & comparison with OPC.

Now, let us go through some of the main queries regarding white cement, to gain a basic understanding of it.

 1. What is white cement?

White cement as the name suggests, is a type of cement, i.e. manufactured in white color by limiting the presence of some oxide contents while processing. All the properties of white-colored cement resemble the grey OPC except its color.

2. What are the differences between grey cement & white cement?

Sl. no.

              Description

4.

Expensive in comparison to grey cement.

5.

Usage

In all types of construction works

In specific construction works due to its high cost.

3. How white cement is manufactured?

All the raw materials like limestone, feldspar, clays, etc. are fed in the crushing chambers at the specified proportions. The crushed raw materials are then fed at a controlled rate in the kiln for the clinker formation. The clinker so formed is passed to the ball mill along with the required quantity of gypsum, to grind them together into a fine powder. The finished product is transported to cement silos and stored for packaging purposes.

The energy consumption is about 30 to 40% higher in manufacturing white cement when compared to the grey OPC. The production process needs more accuracy having electronically operated types of machinery so that the finished product will maintain its uniform white color. Due to this, the white cement costs 2.5 to 3.0 times that of grey OPC.

4. What are the uses of white cement?

White cement is used in,

1. Architectural works that need a bright-colored finish.

2. Making sculptures & monuments.

3. Filling tile joints in flooring, skirting,& dado.

4. The construction of such building parts where its aesthetic & royal look has the priority.

5.  Manufacturing precast cement products with a good surface finish.

6. Different colored pigments as a binder material so that the pigment retains its true color after setting.

7. Certain grouting works.

 5. What is the setting & drying time of white cement?

The physical characteristics and properties of white cement match with the type 1 ordinary portland cement. So we can treat white cement as equivalent to grey cement with a similar setting and drying time as that of  OPC.
