How to calculate the cutting length of 4-legged stirrups? / Calculating the cutting length of 4 - legged stirrup in a column.

 If you are looking for a readymade calculator for 4-legged stirrups, then click here.

 For the calculation procedure, go through the following steps.👇

Let us calculate the cutting length of the 4-legged stirrups as shown below.

Given data :

Column size = 600mm × 450mm.

Clear cover = 40mm.

Rebar diameter = 20mm.

 No. of rebars = 8nos.

Stirrup bar dia. = 8mm.

Note: In 4-legged stirrups, the cutting length of stirrup-1 and stirrup-2 are the same, so we will find out the cutting length of a single stirrup.

The cutting length of the stirrup-2 :

The cutting length of the stirrup-2

  = [ {(2nos. × (a +b )) +( hook length)} - {90° bend + 135° bend} ]

Here,

a = [2X + (2nos. × 1/2× dia. of rebar) + (2nos. × 1/2 dia. of stirrup bar.)]

First, we will calculate X where,

X = [column width - {(2nos.× cover) +( 2nos.× dia. of stirrup bar ) +(2nos.×1/2 dia. of rebar)}] ÷ 3

  = [ 450mm - {( 2nos. × 40mm ) + ( 2nos. × 8mm ) + ( 2nos. × 1/2 × 20mm )}] ÷ 3

 =  [ 450mm - { 80mm + 16mm + 20mm }] ÷ 3

 = [ 450mm - 116mm ] ÷ 3

 = 334mm ÷ 3

= 111.33mm.

Now, inserting the value of X in the calculation of a

a = [(2 × 111.33mm ) + (2nos ×1/2 × 20mm ) + ( 2nos. × 1/2 × 8mm.)]

  = [ 222.66mm + 20mm + 8mm ]

 = 250.66 mm.

Now, we will calculate the value of b.

b = [column depth - {(2nos. × clear cover) + ( 2nos. ×1/2 × dia. of stirrup bar. )}]

   = [ 600mm - { ( 2nos. × 40mm. ) + ( 2nos. × 1/2 × 8mm )}]

  = [ 600mm - { 80mm + 8mm }]

 = [ 600mm - 88mm ]

  = 512mm.

The cutting length of the stirrup-2

 =[ {(2nos. × (a +b )) + (hook length )} - {(90° bend ) + (135° bend)}]

 Here, 10d is taken for hook length.

We have deducted 2d for 90° bend -3nos., & 3d for 135° bend -2nos. as shown in the above drawing.

= [{( 2nos.× ( 250.66mm + 512mm ) ) + ( 2nos. × 10d ) } - {( 3nos. × 2d ) + ( 2nos. × 3d ) }]

= [{(2nos. × 762.66 mm ) + ( 2nos. × 10 × 8mm ) } - { ( 3nos. × 2 × 8mm ) + ( 2nos. × 3 × 8mm )}]

= [{ 1525.32mm + 160mm } - {48mm + 48mm }]

= [ 1685.32mm - 96mm ]

= 1589.32 mm.

The cutting length of stirrup-1 = the cutting length of the stirrup-2 = 1589.32mm
