How to calculate the volume & weight of asphalt in road construction?

Let us now calculate the volume & weight of the asphalt in the below-given drawing.

Given data:

Length of the asphalt = 2km = 2000m.

Width of the asphalt = 8m.

The thickness of the asphalt = 100 mm. = 0.1m.

❤. Difference between asphalt, bitumen, and tar./What is asphalt, bitumen, and tar?

Calculation:

The volume of the asphalt in a road

= [length × breadth × depth]

= [2000m. × 8m. × 0.1m.]

= 1600 cum.

The compacted weight of the asphalt

= [volume × asphalt density.]

As you know,

The density of asphalt = 2243 kg/cum.

So, the total weight of the asphalt

= [1600 cum. × 2243 kg/cum.]

= 3,56,800 kg.

While doing the road construction work, the asphalt is procured in tons from a hot mix plant.

1 ton = 1000 kg.

The total quantity of asphalt required

= [3,56,800 ÷ 1000]

 = 356.80 tons.
