What is Hoppus foot in wooden volume calculation?

What is Hoppus foot in wooden volume calculation?

Hoppus cubic foot is the usable volume measurement of the wooden log. Hoppus foot formula is traditionally used since the olden days before the metric system. It calculates the available volume of timber from the wooden log after processing.

In other words, hoppus cubic foot squares the round wooden log volume as shown in the sectional drawing.

          1 Hoppus foot = 1.273 cu ft.

or     1 cu ft. = 0.7855 hoppus ft.

      What does that mean?

Here, the hoppus foot formula considers the area of square ABCD as shown in the drawing.

In the cylindrical volume of the wooden log, after deducting the outer wastage, the vol. of the inner cuboid is derived in hoppus cu ft.

If the volume of the round wooden log is 1cu ft., the hoppus cu ft. volume will be 0.7855 cu ft. The remaining 0.2145 cu ft. will be discarded as wastage in the wood processing.

Let us understand this concept with an example.

Given data:

Circumference of the wooden log C1 = 32" = 2.667 ft.

Circumference of another end of the log C2 = 36"= 3 ft.

Length of the wooden log = L = 14 ft.

The total volume of the wooden log

=[ π × r2  × L]

Average circumference C = [ (C1+C2) ÷ 2]

  C = [ (32"+36") ÷ 2]

      = 34" = 2.833 ft.

Circumference C = 2 ×π × r

So,  r = [ C ÷  2 ×π ]

         = [ 2.833 ÷  2 ×3.142 ]

        = 0.451 ft.

The total volume of the wooden log

=[ π × (r)2  × L]

= [3.142 ×( 0.451)2  × 14 ft.]

= 8.947 cu ft.

❤. How to calculate the usable volume of a wooden log?/Calculating the Hoppus cu ft. volume of a wooden log.

The hoppus cu ft. volume of the wooden log = 7.024 cu ft.

Note: The hoppus cu ft. is taken from the above-linked article.

1 hoppus cu ft.

= [total volume of the wooden log ÷ hoppus cu ft. vol. of the log]

=[ 8.947 ÷ 7.024]

=1.273 cu ft.

or

1 cu ft. volume of the wooden log

=  [hoppus cu ft. vol. of the log ÷ total vol. of wooden log.]

= [ 7.024 ÷ 8.947]

= 0.785 hoppus cu ft.

So, how this formula is useful for us?

Suppose you buy a wooden log from the govt. tender or from a timber merchant, you can directly calculate the available cu ft. of the timber for your construction works.
