How to calculate the effective span of the simply supported beam?/ Calculating the effective length of an RCC simply supported beam.

Let us calculate the effective length of the RCC beam as shown below.

Given data:

Beam depth = 450mm.

Beam width =230mm.

Clear cover = 25mm.

Dia. of stirrup bar = 8mm.

Dia. of bottom bar = 20mm.

The clear span of the beam = 5000mm. =5m.

Support at column-1 = 450mm.

Support at column-2 = 380mm.

To understand what is effective length & effective depth, let us observe the drawing as shown below.

Calculation:

According to IS-456:2000, the effective length (span) of a simply supported beam is defined as given below.

Step-1:

The effective length of the beam

= [clear span + 1/2 support of column-1 + 1/2 support of column-2]

= [5000mm. + 1/2 × 450mm. + 1/2 × 380mm.]

= [5000mm. + 225mm. + 190mm.]

= 5415mm.

Step -2:

The effective length of the beam

= [clear span of the beam + effective depth]

= [5000mm. + 407mm.]

= 5407mm.

Note: The effective depth (taken above) is calculated in the separate article as linked below.

Step-3

The actual effective length of the beam will be the lesser of the values calculated in step-1 & step-2

Here,  step-2 < step-1

i.e. 5407mm.< 5415mm.

So, the effective length of the beam = 5407 mm.
