According to IS-456:2000, the effective length (span) of a cantilever beam is defined as given below.
There are two conditions to calculate the effective span of the cantilever beam according to its location. Let us go through both types of cantilever beams as given below.
1. Type-1:
Let us calculate the effective length or effective span of the type-1 cantilever beam as shown below.
Given data:
Beam depth = 450mm.
Clear cover = 25mm.
Dia. of stirrup bar = 8mm.
Dia. of top bar = 16mm.
The clear span of beam = 1800mm. =1.80m.
To understand what is effective span & effective depth in the cantilever beam, let us observe the drawing as shown below.
The effective length of the cantilever beam (1st condition)
= [clear span of the beam + 1/2 × effective depth]
= [1800mm. + 1/2 × 409mm.]
= 2004.5mm.
Note: The effective depth (taken above) is calculated in the separate article as linked below.

👀. How to calculate the effective cover & effective depth of a cantilever beam?
The effective span of the cantilever beam ( 2nd condition)
= [clear span + (1/2 × support of column)]
= [1800mm. + (1/2 × 480mm.)]
= [1800mm. + 240mm.]
= 2240mm.
