How to calculate the effective span of the continuous beam? (Part-1)/ Calculating the effective length of a continuous beam.

Let us understand the effective span of the continuous beam for different conditions as per

IS-456:2000, in 3 parts with illustrative examples.

According to IS-456:2000, the effective span (length) of a continuous beam is defined as given below.

Example -1:

Let us calculate the effective span of the continuous beam as shown below.

Given data:

Beam depth = 450mm.

Support width of column = 300mm.

Clear span = 4500mm.

Calculation:

Let us check condition-1 of the IS-456 code.

         [1/12 × clear span]

        = [1/12 ×4500mm.]

        = 375mm. > 300mm.

Here, the width of the column support is less than 1/12th of the clear span of the beam.

So, the effective span shall be as per 22.2 (a) as shown below.

In this case, we have to treat the continuous beam as a simply supported beam to calculate the effective span.

The procedure to find out the effective span of a simply supported beam is solved in a separate article as linked below.

The above-given example can be solved by following a similar procedure.
