What are the different types of air conditioners?/Classification of air conditioners.

The different types of air conditioners are as follows.

1. Window air conditioner:

As the name suggests, they are installed in a window area. They can also be fixed by creating an opening in the wall.

Window AC ejects heat to the exterior through the outer component & cool air is pumped into the room's interior.

These types of AC units are suitable for compact rooms or apartments. They come in various sizes to fit into all types of window openings.

2. Floor-mounted AC:

They are fitted to the floor level by making a hole in the walls. These units can be fitted up to 6 inches above the floor level.

Floor-mounted AC cools the air at the bottom level quickly. But, if the room has too much furniture, the air circulation may get obstructed. It needs open space around them to work at its maximum efficiency.

3. Central air conditioner:

Central AC is suitable for bigger rooms and houses to cool the larger space in a lesser time. The cool air passes into the room through the multiple ducts installed at several points.

Central AC consists of two main components. The outer unit is made of a compressor & condenser, while the inner unit consists of an evaporator & air flow regulator.

These types of AC consume larger power, resulting in higher electric bills.

4. Portable air conditioner:

Portable AC can be moved to any place of your home as per your needs. The only requirement is a small opening to fix the exhaust outlet & electric power board.

They are single-unit systems with all the working components are enclosed within their body. Portable AC is very handy & simple to set up.

5. Smart air conditioner:

Smart AC are wifi-enabled products & are operated through smartphones by installing specific apps.

The working principle is similar to split, window, or portable type air conditioners. But the only advantage is they can be operated from any corner of the room with additional comfort & convenience.

They are more expensive than regular AC units, as they have numerous working features.

6. Ductless mini split AC:

They are wall-mounted type AC units & are operated by remote controls. One outdoor unit can be connected to as many as four air-handling indoor units as per the capacity of the AC.

Each inner unit can be controlled individually, according to the required cooling effect.

7. Geothermal air conditioner:

Geothermal AC provides both heating & cooling effect to the interior. The heat pump used in them is 2 in 1 HVAC system for both heating & cooling the inner space.

The underground loop of pipes conduits heats through the fluids which collect the thermal energy of the earth.

8. Evaporative air conditioner:

Evaporative AC only uses water & air instead of refrigerant systems. They are good in dry weather areas & they won't work well in humid conditions.

9. Packaged unit AC:

Packaged AC are the bigger versions to cool the entire home, restaurants, hotels, offices, etc. They provide a high cooling effect to the entire area.

The entire AC unit is assembled in a single casing & is delivered in a single package by the factories.

10. Variable capacity AC:

Variable capacity AC works according to the heating or cooling load conditions of the room. The compressor modulates & varies its working speed, depending on the required inner temperature.

11. Hybrid air conditioner:

Hybrid AC utilizes a dual source of energy for efficient running. Regular AC in combination with solar power utilization can save up to 30% on your power bills.

The inner coil of the AC absorbs the thermal energy for the cooling process.

12. Cassette air conditioner:

Cassette air conditioners are the type of  AC units that are designed to be installed in false ceilings. As the working unit is hidden within the ceiling, they provide an aesthetic appearance to the room.

Mostly, you can observe such types of AC units in hotels, commercial buildings, offices, etc.

  1. When I was on vacation, it was super hot outside. Luckily, I had a portable air conditioner hire with me to beat the heat. It worked really well and gave me a lot of cool air, which was a huge help in that hot weather.
