Finding viewing distance of a TV./How to calculate the perfect size of a TV according to your room size?

When we construct a house, we decide the room size mostly depending upon our available budget. But, when we purchase a bigger size TV, we may feel uncomfortable while watching it due to insufficient viewing distance.

Now the question is, what is viewing distance as per the tv size & how it is calculated?

The viewing distance mainly depends upon the following 3 factors.

1. Size of the TV.

2. Pixels of the TV screen &

3. Viewing angle or installation height.

First, let us understand the above given 3 factors to avoid further confusion.

1. TV size:

Some people are wrong to believe that the width or height of the TV represents its size. But in actuality, the size of the TV is measured along its diagonal length.

As you can observe in the above image, the 42" TV means, its length measured across the diagonal.

2. TV screen pixels:

Nowadays, high-resolution TVs like 4k(Ultra HD) & 8k (UHD) are trending in the market. These TVs have sharper & more detailed picture quality.

The pixels of 8k-UHD are so small that we cannot distinguish them from the close-up view.

Due to their realistic & more sophisticated image quality, we can watch them from a closer distance when compared to older TV versions.

3. Viewing angle:

For a good experience, the recommended viewing angle for our eyesight should be between 30° to 40°.  Keeping the angles in between the recommended range is soothing & comfortable for our eye muscles & our eyes won't get tired when we watch TV for a longer duration.

Considering these factors, a formula is evolved to calculate the preferred viewing distance of a TV, that satisfies all these 3 conditions.

i.e.

Viewing distance = [1.62 🇽 TV size]

Eg:

What should be the viewing distance for a TV of 42" size?

Viewing distance

             = [1.62 🇽 TV size]

             = [1.62 🇽 42"]

             = 68.04"

In feet      👉 5' 8"

In meter   👉 1.728m.

However, a range is set up for the viewing distance calculation, depending upon the type of TV resolution as follows.

Maximum viewing distance = [1.9 🇽 TV size]

Minimum viewing distance = [1.2 🇽 TV size]

Go through the following table to know the viewing distance as per your TV size.

From the above data, you might have understood that if you are planning to install a home theatre of 120" size, the preferred viewing distance should be 16' 2".

By adding 2' extra for placing furniture, the measurement of the room should be 18' for a comfortable viewing experience.

Thank you for going through this article. Have a good day 😄.
