Checklist for column concreting./Procedure to be followed for concreting of columns.

Following are the 13 points that should be checked for the concreting of the column.

1. Column reinforcement:

You have to check all the 11 points in the reinforcement of the columns as described in the article, "Checklist for column reinforcement./ Points to be checked in column reinforcement". Checking all these points is a must before the concrete work.

2. Column formwork:

You have to check in detail the formwork of the column as explained in the article, "What are the points to be checked in column shuttering? / Checklist for column formwork".

This is a necessary step before we proceed further in our checklist.

3. Quantity of material:

You have to calculate the volume of the column concrete & the quantity of the individual raw material required for the concrete work.
You have to check for the adequate stock of all the materials as per the calculation so that the concrete work should not be stopped in between, due to the material shortage.

4. Quality of material:

You have to ensure the quality of the procured raw materials by conducting the tests as required by the specification. If you find any material having an inferior quality that does not follow the required standards, those raw materials should be replaced beforehand.

5. Machinery:

All the construction machinery like concrete mixer, vibrator, weigh bather, etc. should be arranged prior to concrete work. These types of machinery should be in a good running condition without any trouble.

You have to keep the standby vibrator & needle as a precaution for uninterrupted work.

All other construction equipment like measuring boxes ( pharma ), trolleys, & machinery fuels like diesel, petrol, kerosene, etc. should be prearranged.

6. Mix proportion:

You have to go through the given concrete grade before you start the work. The mix proportion should be checked for its accuracy while concrete batching.
All the workers should be set in the first two to three batching cycles to increase the efficiency of work.

7. Concrete pouring:

While pouring the concrete in the column mold, care should be taken to minimize the wastage due to the extra spilling of the material. The height of the concrete pouring should be kept within the specified standards, to control the segregation & honeycombing in concrete.

8. Concrete cube:

A concrete cube of 6 nos should be prepared per set, as per the given volume of column concrete.  Casted date, concrete batch, & serial no. should be written over the concrete cube, prior to its setting.

9. W/C ratio:

The water-cement ratio should be checked while concrete mixing, & should be controlled as per the design requirement. Adding extra water for workability results in bleeding & segregation of concrete.

Go through: What is the Water cement ratio in construction? - the importance of the w/c ratio & its calculation.

10. Vibrator:

The vibration of the concrete should be done as per the requirement, for the compaction of the concrete.  The distance between the needle immersion & vibration timing should be maintained, as per the standards.

11. Cement slurry:

The formwork should be checked at regular intervals for its firmness. Any bulging in the shuttering due to the vibration should be corrected by using the extra clamps (shikanja ). Joints of the column shuttering should be checked for any oozing of cement slurry & should be prevented.

12. Concrete level:

The final level of the poured concrete should be kept up to the given marking. The top surface of the column should be kept in rough condition, for good extension bonding.

13. Cleaning:

When the concrete work is completed, all the construction machinery, equipment, platform, etc. should be cleaned & kept ready for the next batch of concrete.
