How to calculate the painting area of corrugated roofing sheets?

Roofing sheets consume more paint due to their corrugated surface areas. Now, let us calculate the total painting area of corrugated roofing sheets for different types of models.

Corrugated roofing sheets are available in different patterns, that make to change their overall painting area.

As per IS -1200 -1987, the percentage increase in the painting areas for various types of sheets is as below.

Now, let us go through the painting area calculation method for the different sheet models as shown below.

1. GI corrugated sheet:

Given data:

Length of the sheet = 3m.

Width of the sheet =1.15m.

Percentage increase in the areas as per IS:1200 -1987 = 14%

Calculation:

Area of the GI corrugated sheet

          = [length x width]

          = [ 3m. x 1.15m.]

         = 3.45 m²

 Total painting surface area

= [area of GI sheet + 14% of the area of GI sheet]

= [ 3.45 m² + {(14 100) x 3.45 m²}]

= [3.45 m² + 0.483 m²]

= 3.933 m².

Total painting area of the GI sheet on one side = 3.933m².

Alternate method:

Here,

 Multiplying factor

= [14% increase per unit area]

  = [1+ 14 /100]

  = 1.14

We can directly multiply the sheet area by a coefficient factor of 1.14

 Total painting surface area

= [area of GI sheet x 1.14]

= [3.45 m² x 1.14]

= 3.933 m².

For your clear understanding, let us calculate the painting area of the corrugated asbestos roofing sheet in sq. ft.

2. Asbestos corrugated sheet:

    Given data:

Length of the asbestos sheet = 8 ft.

Width of the asbestos sheet =3.5 ft.

Percentage increase in the areas as per IS:1200 -1987 = 20%

Calculation:

Area of the asbestos corrugated sheet

          = [length x width]

          = [ 8 ft. x 3.5 ft.]

          = 28 sq. ft.

Total painting surface area

= [area of asbestos sheet x multiplying factor]

Here, multiplying factor

= [20% increase per unit area]

  = [1+ 20/100]

  = 1.20

Total painting surface area

= [area of asbestos sheet x 1.20]

= [28 sq ft. x 1.20]

= 33.60 sq ft.

Total painting area of the asbestos sheet on one side = 33.60 sq ft.

Note:

Similarly, you can calculate the painting areas for semi-corrugated & Nainital pattern sheets.
